What is Affiliate Marketing?

Now that you know about the event, I want to talk about what you’ll be learning there, which is a business model you can use to earn an income. But first, let me introduce myself!

I’m Keely, social media manager here at ClickBank and a minor social media influencer that makes money online through content creation! I’ve dedicated my time at ClickBank to creating content that helps others learn how to make money online and monetize their audience! It’s a huge passion of mine to be able to help others find financial freedom, which is why I’m here. 

So now, to the WHAT of affiliate marketing! 

At the base of it all, affiliate marketing is simply about making money online. As an affiliate, your job is to find products you can promote online and well… promote them, and help bring in a cash flow for yourself. 

With affiliate marketing, there are three KEY PLAYERS in the game:

1. The product owner or brand: a business looking for more people to promote their products online. 
2. The consumer: the person on the internet who will buy those products. 
3. The affiliate, or YOU if you so choose… 

Affiliates promote brands’ products, and the consumer buys those products. As an affiliate, you then receive a percentage of each sale on the product, which is how you earn money; and the business gets more people to keep purchasing their products.

The money you earn as an affiliate all comes from the commissions earned when you get a sale through your own special tracking link. Brands choose their commission rates based on a bunch of calculations and factors that we won’t worry about right now.

While it seems simple enough, there’s a lot of nuances that come with affiliate marketing. With all the different niches, audiences, product types, sub-niches, and everything in between, it can feel pretty convoluted trying to get started. However, I’m here to break it down for you, term-by-term and step-by-step! Let’s go! 

Affiliate Marketing Basics

So we know now WHAT affiliate marketing is, at its core: promoting products from a seller or brand and pocketing commissions for every sale you generate!

Let’s go back to the basics and break it down. Affiliate marketing has 3 key players, right? We have a business owner, so let’s start with them. Let’s say the business owner’s name is Jerry in this case, and Jerry wants to promote their products and gain more customers and sales for their microfiber towel company. 

This microfiber towel company has been doing pretty well on its own, but isn’t seeing the continued growth they were hoping for. Jerry’s microfiber towel company decides they want to budget for an affiliate program to get affiliates to help with their marketing efforts.

So, the company reaches out to a few affiliate networks, and they finally find the right one for them (hopefully ClickBank!). Next, Jerry’s chosen affiliate network helps onboard Jerry’s microfiber towels onto their marketplace. They work with Jerry to decide what kind of commission rate they’d like to offer to affiliates who promote their product, and they iron out a few more details.

From there, the affiliate marketer – possibly YOU – comes along. You start learning how to make money online, and then you decide it’s time for you to jump into the rabbit hole of affiliate marketing as well. You take the first step, which is deciding on your niche.

Deciding on your niche essentially means you’re choosing what kind of products and promotional space you want to be in. When I first started with affiliate marketing, I took a look at myself, my hobbies, and what I enjoyed, and decided on a health and wellness niche, since that aligns a lot with what I do and my day-to-day lifestyle. 

Once you’ve decided on your niche, you’ll take the time to research different affiliate products within that niche to find a product that you think will sell well to your audience. 

NOTE: Friendly tip from a fellow affiliate… When it comes to searching for affiliate programs, I like to take a look at a few different factors to help me decide on the best affiliate program for me. I first will look at commission rates that are generally offered with the affiliate program. Then, I’ll check out the marketplace and get a feel for how intuitive and easy-to-use the platform is. I also like to look at the different products on the marketplace to make sure they align with my niche, my goals, and my potential audience. 

As an affiliate, once you’ve chosen your niche, your affiliate program or programs, and the products you’re going to promote, you’re nearly there. The biggest decision now is whether you’re going to focus on a paid traffic source or an organic one. What does this mean? 

Paid vs Free Traffic

Think of the two options as cars. Paid promotions are sort of like driving a really nice, fast car… A Porsche or Ferrari maybe. It’s going to cost you more upfront, but it’ll get you where you want to go REALLY fast!

Essentially, paid affiliate marketing is promoting products of your choice with paid ads. Whether that’s paid advertising on Meta (Facebook), Google, or native, it costs money upfront to get that going – but once you do, you can quickly see a big return on your investment, since paid advertising reaches a large targeted audience quickly.

On the other hand, there’s organic affiliate marketing. If we stick with our car example, organic is sort of like the Honda Accord of affiliate marketing. For her, the plan was affiliate marketing with “weight loss + Facebook Ads + ClickBank.” She also discovered the power of storytelling in your ads, because stories can capture people’s attention and make them engage with your ad without you needing to make any specific claims or promises about a particular product.

And her advice? “All you need is one campaign, one video, one ad to reach Platinum,” she says.

2) Liss Graham

Liss Graham is an email marketing and list management pro who works with many of the top ClickBank clients, helping them monetize their email list in exchange for a percentage of the sales she and her team generate.

Coming from a small Texas town, Liss has had an incredible path to success in the affiliate marketing space. She started out as a science teacher and randomly came across a weight loss product that helped her lose 50 pounds – and then started working with the team behind the offer, eventually becoming their email manager.

Since 2016, she’s been in business for herself. Her first-ever live event was ClickBank Platinum Summit when she went as a guest of one of her clients. The very next year, she was Platinum herself – and she’s never looked back!

3) Ernesto Mejia
